Sony abandons PlayStation Mobile effort on Android

 

Sony is powering down its PlayStation Mobile effort on Android. The game maker announced that it will not certify any more phones to run the gaming storefront nor will it support future versions of Android.
PlayStation Mobile was Sony’s attempt to create a cross-platform marketplace for indie games that would work on both the PlayStation Vita and certain Android phones. It launched the gaming initiative in 2012.
However, its implementation was rather fragmented as the PlayStation Mobile app, necessary for downloading games, only worked on a small number of certified devices. Most were manufactured by Sony itself; the list did not include popular flagships like the Galaxy S4, S5, or HTC One variants.
Also, the PlayStation Mobile site claims “50 fun-to-play games,” substantially less than the significant catalogue of titles available from the Google Play Store.
Anyone using a PlayStation-certified device on Android 4.4.2 or below can still get games through the PlayStation Store. However, Sony at some point is likely to nix the store on Android entirely; as more devices update their Android version, they will no longer support PlayStation gaming.

T-Mobile releases an app in the Google Play Store that lets you easily unlock your phone

Update 9:52 AM PST: T-Mobile's Device Unlock app is live and ready to use for those of you with compatible devices. Annoyingly, it's only compatible with Galaxy Avant smartphones for now. We tried it on an T-mobile variant of the LG G3 and while it installed just fine, it wouldn't unlock the phone. It's also getting some nasty reviews in the Google Play Store because of that limitation. 
According to TmoNews.com, the US’s fourth biggest carrier is working on an app that lets its users easily unlock their phones with the literal touch of a button. It’s a really smart idea, and it's probably how the carrier plans to appeal to all the novice smartphone users out there.
Now that we’ve all had time to celebrate the fact that unlocking our phones is legal, the next task is to figure out how to actually that.
For many of you Android enthusiasts out there, you probably know what you’re doing, but there are many out there with tied-down phones who have no idea where to start. And since unlocked phones are basically a civil liberty for the time being, T-Mobile plans to help them. 

 

The app will apparently provide two unlock options: one that permanently unlocks a device, for those who want complete freedom from the carrier, and a temporary unlock, which frees the phone for 30 days so you an use it overseas. The permanent unlocking option will check to see if your device is actually eligible for it before it completes the process. A screenshot by TmoNews shows the alert that pops up when unlocking is unsuccessful.
It’s possible that this leak is entirely made-up by well-wishers out there, but this is certainly an app that all the big four carriers should consider preloading over all the other bloatware they pack on new phones.

Google Releases Updated Android L Factory Images for Nexus 5 and Nexus 7

Google has released updated Android L system factory images for the Nexus 5 smartphone and Nexus 7 (2013) tablet. The new release bumps-up the version from LPV79 (released in June) to LPV81C.
The updated Android L system factory images primarily bring support for the company's health-tracking platform, Google Fit. The Mountain View giant also released the preview SDK (software development kit) to help developers build health and fitness apps for Google Fit on Thursday.

Google's Developer preview page lists the new factory images for the Nexus 5 and Wi-Fi only Nexus 7 (2013) and says that it brings Google Fit support alongside the Google Fit preview client library.
Notably, the Android L system factory images are not available for other Nexus devices, apart from Nexus 5 (Review | Pictures) and Nexus 7 (Review | Pictures), as of now. The preview images are not available as an over-the-air update, which means users have to manually flash the device that will lead to loss of the stored data on the device, notes XDA forum.
Google announced the next major build of Android for smartphones and tablets, currently codenamed Android L, at the I/O event. Google also detailed some of the features and confirmed that Android L will be released later this year without revealing an exact time frame.
With Android L, Google has refreshed the interface design of the entire operating system, which the company identifies as the new "Material Design." The default Chrome browser has been also upgraded on Android L. For the new OS, Google also ditched the Dalvik runtime and introduced ART for 64-bit, which allows apps to run faster, and now the Android devices can be expected to address more RAM than the 32-bit limit allowed.
